The runaway hit “Ajosepo” is poised to enter rarified air at the Nigerian box office. With N177 million ($126, 429.00) in earnings after four weeks, projections show the romantic comedy is headed to surpass the N200 million milestone.
If it reaches that mark, “Ajosepo” will become the 10th film in the country’s box office history to gross over N200 million while opening below N40 million, according to data compiled by Nigerian Box Office on X.
Among the elite club are “Barbie” (N39.7 million opening), “Merry Men 2” (N37.2 million), “Malaika” (N33.9 million), “Ijakumo” (N31.2 million), “Wedding Party” (N31 million), “Jumanji” (N28.8 million), “Ada Omo Daddy” (N27.7 million) and “King of Boys” (N6.8 million).
The N32 million opening weekend for “Ajosepo” was director Kayode Kasum’s biggest since his 2019 hit “Sugar Rush” launched to N50 million. Over the past month, the two-hour film has outperformed Hollywood blockbusters like “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “Civil War” and local heavyweight “Beasts of Two Worlds (Ajakaju).”
Strong reviews, positive word-of-mouth and Kasum’s pedigree are expected to propel “Ajosepo” in the coming weeks as it tries to climb even higher on the all-time charts outside of the lucrative December release period.
