Chibuike Emmanuel, one of the actors featured in the ongoing I Met A Girl Today monologue series, believes the boy-meets-girl trope remains one of Nollywood’s most relatable storytelling devices because of its connection to the vulnerability that often comes with love and romance.
Speaking with The Nollywood Reporter (TNR), Emmanuel says that emotional vulnerability is at the heart of I Met A Girl Today.
“That is the inspiration behind I Met A Girl Today,” he says.
Produced by Sibon Films, the makers of Ikemefuna: Big Boys Don’t Cry, the four-part series runs for four weeks, with a new episode released every Friday. The first episode is already available.
Emmanuel, who stars alongside Treasure Chikwendu, believes stories like I Met A Girl Today remain relevant because of how familiar their central experiences are to audiences. However, he says the series goes beyond simply recounting how two people met to explore the emotions attached to that encounter.
“…Even as the relationship develops between them, hoping to stir up a conversation around that with the audience,” he adds.
On what sets him apart as an actor, Emmanuel describes himself as having “zero inhibitions,” allowing him to embrace vulnerability and fully commit to a character without being judgmental.
For I Met A Girl Today, he hopes audiences recognise the honesty he brings to the role, particularly because romance can be easy to portray but more difficult to make audiences genuinely feel.
“So if they walk away remembering a specific look, a pause, a moment where it felt less like acting and more like eavesdropping on something real, then I’ve done my job,” he says.
For potential Nollywood producers, Emmanuel hopes the series also demonstrates his range beyond romance and chemistry. He wants them to see an actor capable of holding intimacy and restraint at the same time.
“That I’m not just hitting emotional beats but building a person underneath them. I hope they see someone they can trust with nuance, not just chemistry,” he says.
Emmanuel remains confident in what I Met A Girl Today represents for him as an actor, describing the project as evidence that he can carry a story.
“And that there’s more where that came from,” he adds.
