Walt Disney Pictures has released the first trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” an upcoming live-action prequel that will depict the origins and backstory of Mufasa prior to the events of the 1994 animated film.

Written by Jeff Nathanson and directed by Barry Jenkins, the movie tells the story from the perspective of Rafiki and delves into Mufasa’s relationship with his brother Scar before the tragic circumstances leading to Mufasa’s death.

The prequel, which is set to hit theatres on Dec. 20, 2024, features a star-studded voice cast, including:

  • Aaron Pierre as Mufasa
  • Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Scar (Taka)
  • Seth Rogen as Pumbaa
  • Billy Eichner as Timon
  • John Kani as Rafiki
  • Tiffany Boone as Sarabi
  • Donald Glover as Simba
  • Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala

Blue Ivy Carter will also be voicing the character Kiara – Simba and Nala’s daughter – in this animated film that serves as her feature film debut. Additional cast members are Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, and others in undisclosed roles.

The trailer provides the first extended look at the photorealistic computer animation aiming to bring the African savannah and Pride Lands to life.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” is set for a theatrical release on December 20, 2024.
