The 15th edition of the Durban FilmMart, a renowned event that champions the development of African cinema, is set to return from July 19 to 22, 2024.
Hosted by the Durban FilmMart Institute, this year’s event is themed “African Visions Unleashed” and promises to be a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of African filmmakers.
The Durban FilmMart has long been instrumental in recognizing and promoting African talent on a global scale. The previous edition, held in 2023 under the theme “African Constellations,” was a resounding success.
It attracted 1,018 delegates from 43 countries, 68 partners, and 347 Finance Forum Meetings to work on 35 different projects. The event also featured 129 speakers and panelists who presented 25 awards to selected projects.
This year’s edition of the Durban FilmMart will include panel discussions, roundtables, and masterclasses aimed at creating and building a new African vision of filmmaking. The event will also feature co-curated sessions with sponsors, professional industry groups, and a networking space for official projects and programs.
The Durban FilmMart’s mission is to promote global interest and investment in the African film industry. In 2021, the event was recognized by UNESCO’s Film Trends in Africa Report as Africa’s best film market, further solidifying its reputation as a crucial platform for the growth and development of African cinema.
“African Visions Unleashed” promises to be a captivating exploration of the diverse narratives and artistic expressions emerging from the African continent. The event will serve as a catalyst for critical conversations surrounding cultural issues and the future of African filmmaking.
