Genoveva Umeh and Chimezie Imo Set to Star in Romantic-Comedy “Strawberry Chinny”

In what is fantastic news coming from the film streets of Nigeria, Cheta Chukwu’s “Strawberry Chinny,” a romantic-comedy starring Genoveva Umeh and Chimezie Imo, will have its grand premiere at the prestigious Essence Film Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, from July 4 to July 7, 2024.

Produced by Kele, Ngozi Okafor, and Imo in his production debut, the heart-warming tale chronicles the living situation of two best friends (Umeh and Imo) after one of them (Umeh) breaks up with her boyfriend. The plot becomes amusing and awkward when jealousy threatens to ruin their friendship. They soon realize they have been more than “best friends” all along.

Expressing his vision for the film, Chukwu shared in a press statement, “The heart of ‘Strawberry Chinny’ lies in its relatability. We aimed to create characters that feel like old friends, inviting the audience to laugh, cry, and reflect on their own journey.”

Joining Umeh and Imo in this hilarious journey are Moola Osifuwa and Obehi Aburime. “Strawberry Chinny” also serves as a reunion for Umeh and Imo as the two stars previously played a couple in the award-winning Prime Video drama film “Breath of Life.”

The Essence Film Festival is a prestigious film festival that highlights Black stories by showcasing the works− film, television, and drama−of storytellers in the diaspora.

“Strawberry Chinny” heading to the Essence Film Festival is a significant feat as it joins the roster of other Nollywood films that have been picked up by international film festivals.
