As the 2025 iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival (iRep) came to a close, a thought-provoking conversation on artistic freedom took center stage.

The final plenary session, held in collaboration with the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), explored the theme “Is Art a Limitless Freedom Way?” delving into how far artists can push boundaries while challenging societal norms.

Sharing his perspective on March 29, veteran actor Sam Dede argued that while artists should follow their inspiration, they must also acknowledge legal constraints.

“How far is too far? That’s a question every artist must ask. While creativity shouldn’t be restricted, one must remember that laws exist to guide artistic practice,” he noted.

Shaibu Husseini, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) director, emphasized the importance of understanding the cultural and legal landscape, particularly in Nigeria’s diverse society.

“Our society is peculiar. Some ideas that pass elsewhere may not easily pass here. As much as we have creative freedom, we must also be mindful of the law,” he said.

From a writer’s standpoint, Makinde Adeniran, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), reflected on how he filters inspiration before translating it into a finished work.

“When inspiration comes, I don’t just write everything down. I refine and sieve through it. Freedom in art happens within the context of time and space.”

Wrapping up the discussion, iRep Executive Director Femi Odugbemi highlighted the potential of artistic freedom, stating that when used effectively, it can serve as a powerful tool for meaningful expression.
