AMVCA-award-winning filmmaker James Amuta is back with another project, and this time, he is teaming up with Bimbo Akintola for a short film titled A Quiet Room—a story anchored in a pain many women quietly carry: post-partum depression. Directed by Amuta and executive-produced by Akintola, who also leads the cast, the film is expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2026, according to Amuta in an exclusive interview with The Nollywood Reporter.
While sharing the newly released teaser, Amuta revealed that the film will debut on the festival circuit before its official release. “A Quiet Room is somewhat of an arthouse installation, but powerful nonetheless, as it was created to draw attention to a very sensitive subject affecting women.”
The teaser is what Amuta calls “complex,” largely because it’s difficult to visually capture the unraveling mind of someone slowly losing grip of reality. In the 55-second clip, a haunted Akintola sits behind a fire as mysterious whispers seep into the background—a chilling hint of the chaos tormenting her unnamed character.
When asked about the inspiration behind the film’s title, Amuta offered a stark truth: “When your head is filled with voices, when it tells you crowds are out to get you, and when the slightest unwanted sound triggers you, all you want to do is retreat into a quiet room—or do whatever it takes to transform a noisy room into one.”
Amuta is a Nigerian filmmaker known for his bold neo-noir sensibilities. He has a robust portfolio that includes Nightfall in Lagos, Collision Course, Òlòtūré, Black Harvest, and When the Monsters Come Out.
Bimbo Akintola is a revered veteran with three decades in Nollywood. She is celebrated for standout performances in The Black Book, Beast of Two Worlds, Freedom Way, and Alakada: Bad and Boujee.
