The seventh edition of the Joburg Film Festival is set to take place from March 11th to 16th, 2025, in Sandton, Johannesburg, as announced by the festival organizers.
In partnership with Africa’s top Pay TV broadcaster, MultiChoice, the event will bring together filmmakers, industry professionals, and cinema enthusiasts for six days of celebrating the art of storytelling through film.
For the first time in the festival’s history, local filmmakers are being invited to submit their films for consideration. The open call for submissions, which began online last week, encourages South African filmmakers to submit both feature-length and short films.
The submission period will close on October 15, 2024, and detailed guidelines can be found on the official festival website.
The Joburg Film Festival has built a strong reputation as Africa’s leading film event, known for showcasing cinematic excellence and supporting emerging talent. Next year’s edition will feature over 60 films from around the world, continuing its tradition of promoting diversity and championing new voices.
Audiences can look forward to a wide range of film screenings, panel discussions, and special events that celebrate both established and rising filmmakers.
“In the ever-evolving landscape of global media and entertainment, the Joburg Film Festival stands at the forefront of Africa’s cultural and creative revolution,” said Nhlanhla Ndaba, Curator of the Joburg Film Festival. “Now in its seventh year, the festival continues to celebrate filmmaking excellence, offering a unique window into the heart of a continent rich with inspiring stories waiting to be shared on the international stage.”
MultiChoice, a long-time supporter of the festival, continues to play a pivotal role in bringing African stories to the global stage. “At MultiChoice, we’re passionate about telling African stories on the global stage. Film and TV are the heartbeats of our content, and we’re committed to supporting both industries,” said Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice Group. “As the biggest investor in local content, we’re proud to play a pivotal role in ensuring that African storytelling continues to thrive.”
Further details about the 2025 Joburg Film Festival, including its film lineup, guest speakers, and ticket information, will be announced in the coming months.
Organizers encourage the public to stay tuned for updates on the festival’s online platforms as preparations continue for one of the continent’s most celebrated film events.
