Swizz-Cameroonian documentary, “Kevine and Fortune” made its world premiere at the 56th edition of Visions du Réel, screening as part of the festival’s National Competition in Nyon, Switzerland — a picturesque town nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Held from Apr. 4 to Apr. 13, this year’s festival showcased over a hundred compelling films from around the globe.
Penned and directed by Swiss-Ethiopian filmmaker, Sarah Imsand, with cinematography from fellow countryman Sylvian Marco Froidevaux, the 62-minute-long French-language film dives into the intertwined lives of two Cameroonian women footballers, shedding light on the struggle between pursuing their passion for the sport and navigating cultural and societal expectations back home. The subject gained broader attention following the publication of the “Kick It Like a Girl!” report.
The official synopsis for “Kevine and Fortune” goes thus:
“Kevine and Fortune, two inseparable friends, play for the same football team in Yaoundé. To achieve their dream of playing for a foreign club, they must gain recognition as female footballers. Kevine signs with a renowned team and leaves her country behind, while Fortune holds onto the hope of joining her one day. A dazzling modern tale of sisterhood and determination.”
Imsand is renowned for her poetic and politically conscious storytelling, laid bare in a filmography that includes “Bodybuilding” (2025), “Bird Song” (2021), “Tezeta” (2020), and “Le Chant de l’oiseau” (2019).
