Disney Animation is diving back into the world of “Moana” with a sequel to the 2016 hit film about a Polynesian princess and her demigod companion.
“Moana 2” will follow the titular heroine and the shape-shifting Maui as they embark on a new journey across the ocean in search of lost civilizations, the studio made the announcement of the sequel last Wednesday.
The film, with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles as Moana and Maui, is slated for release on November 27, 2024.
The original “Moana” told the story of the adventurous daughter of a Polynesian village chief who teams up with the once-mighty demigod to save her island from an ancient curse. It was a critical and commercial hit, grossing nearly $700 million worldwide.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, Disney promised “amazing storytelling and even more captivating animation” for the sequel, which promises to take viewers on “another exciting adventure on the ocean.”
