Nigerian filmmakers Earn Multiple Septimius Awards Nominations

Stan Nze, Olarotimi Fakunle, Osas Ighodaro and Sharon Ooja are among nominees for the prestigious Amsterdam-based honors.

The prestigious Septimius Awards has announced its selections for the 2025 edition, scheduled for September 3–4 at Amsterdam’s historic Tuschinski Theater, with Nollywood securing multiple nominations.

 

Powered by Cyrus & Dreamers Inc., the Septimius Awards distinguishes itself through its commitment to discovering and encouraging independent talent while supporting visionary filmmaking across all continents. The ceremony attracts a distinguished audience including Emmy, BAFTA, and Oscar winners. This year’s jury includes Stedman Graham, Chris Goffi, Claudio Casillas, Glenn Roggeman, and actors Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors.

 

Leading Nollywood’s strong showing are Stan Nze and Olarotimi Fakunle, nominated in the Best African Actor category alongside Lemogang Tsipa, Ayden Croy, David Isaacs, Oumar Diaw, Adam A. Zango, and Slim Baccar. In the Best African Actress category, Osas Ighodaro and Sharon Ooja will compete with Nomzamo Mbatha, Meriem Medjkane, Nisrin Erradi, Antoinette Louw, Faten Ahmed, and Eya Bellagha.

 

Nigerian and African films have also earned recognition in the Best African Film category, with nominees including Kayode Kasum’s “The Serpent’s Gift,” Prince Daniel Aboki’s “Mai Martaba,” “Algiers,” “Old Righteous Blues,” “Die dekonstruksie van Retta Blom,” “Everybody Loves Touda,” “Nawi,” and “Red Path.”

 

In Best Costume Design, contenders include “Shaka iLembe,” “Mai Martaba,” “Rise of the Raven,” “Ka Whawhai Tonu,” “The Canary,” “Sisi,” “Never Alone,” and “Aire, Just Breathe.” The Best Makeup & Hairstyling category features “Mai Martaba,” “Shaka iLembe,” “Rise of the Raven,” “Ka Whawhai Tonu,” “The Canary,” “Sisi,” “Bury Your Dead,” and “Never Alone.”

 

With its broad international scope, covering submissions from Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, and America, the Septimius Awards offers Nigerian filmmakers a valuable platform to showcase their work to a global audience.

 

Kayode Kasum’s “The Serpent’s Gift” opens in Nigerian cinemas on August 29.
