Indian Telugu film, “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” opened with ₦26.8 million over the December 8-10 weekend (including weekday previews.)
This puts the 200-minute-long sequel to 2021’s action drama, “Pushpa: The Rise,” just behind fellow sequels “Moana 2” and “Gladiator 2” in the Nigerian box office weekly charts.
With a production budget of ₹450 crore ($2.8 million), “Pushpa 2: The Rule” is among the most expensive Bollywood films of all time.
Directed by Bandreddi Sukumar and starring Allu Arjun, the movie has already pushed past a global box office haul of over ₹830 crore ($100 million)—₹581 ($70 million) of which came from India alone.
Globally, the film is performing exceptionally well, it is already past the $45 million global cume of its pandemic-era original film, “Pushpa: The Rise” and outperforming the debuts of Bollywood blockbusters such as “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” ($79 million) and “RRR” ($55 million), “Pushpa 2” is on its way to becoming one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time.
In Nigeria though, the movie’s fortunes are hampered by the juggernauts that are “Moana 2” and “Gladiator 2.” Both sequels ended the weekend with ₦51 million (a 37% drop from last weekend) and ₦32.5 million (a 27% drop from last weekend) respectively. Nevertheless, it will undoubtedly count as a big win for Indian cinema.
