Following the recent selection of his short film Salamatu’s Rhapsody at the 2025 Linz International Short Film Festival, producer Shimataver Igbawua has described the recognition as both a validation of his work and an opportunity for growth.

In an interview with The Nollywood Reporter, Igbawua reflected on the festival’s track record of selectivity. He noted that in 2024, Linz received about 2,750 films from 109 countries, with only 75 shorts making the official program—a 2.7% acceptance rate. He added that submissions in 2025 were even higher.

“So for Salamatu’s Rhapsody not only to be selected but to play in the official competition, judged by professionals with Cannes and Oscar credentials—come on, that’s validation at the highest level. But at the same time, I see it as a call to do more, to grow and improve. That’s really where my focus is,” he said.

Igbawua, who has a debut feature forthcoming, believes the film resonated with the festival because of its distinctively Nigerian roots and universal themes.

“Linz’s mission is to amplify underrepresented voices. I’m thrilled to share this story at a festival that celebrates such diversity, and I’m eager to connect with international audiences and filmmakers there to keep pushing these narratives forward,” he explained.

He admitted that doubt surfaced at different stages in the journey of Salamatu’s Rhapsody, but the Linz selection has become a reassuring sign. “Maybe doubt will always be there, but so will proof that the film speaks across borders.”

Looking ahead, Igbawua hopes the international audience will recognise the richness of African storytelling and the resilience of Nigerian youth.

“I also want them to see the resilience of Nigerian youth: how we create, innovate, and build something out of almost nothing. That spirit is at the heart of Salamatu’s Rhapsody,” he added.
