The trailer for Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White” has become the most disliked in the studio’s history, continuing a string of controversies surrounding the film.
Released on August 10, the 78-second trailer has amassed nearly a million dislikes on YouTube, dwarfing its 80,000 likes. This 1:10 like-to-dislike ratio far surpasses the backlash received by other recent Disney remakes.
The film, directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, has faced criticism since 2023 when Zegler made controversial comments about updating the classic story for modern audiences.
“We absolutely wrote a ‘Snow White’ that … she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Zegler said in a 2023 interview, sparking debate among fans of the original.
Further fueling the controversy were leaked photos showing a diverse group of dwarfs and rumors of on-set tensions between the lead actors.
The trailer’s release has reignited criticism, with viewers expressing their displeasure in the comments. One user wrote, “Rachel Ziegler: ‘If you enjoyed the original movie, then this movie isn’t for you.’ Well, guess this movie isn’t for 99% of Disney fans.” Another commented, “She doesn’t even look kind… Snow White was full of kindness and love. This one looks mad and mean.”
The CGI depiction of the dwarfs has also drawn ire, with one viewer stating, “So… instead of humanizing the dwarf characters with actual actors, they decided to make them horrifyingly cartoonish with cringe-inducing CGI? Smart move!”
Disney executives may face challenges as they approach the film’s March 21, 2025, release date. While other female-led films have overcome pre-release backlash, the intensity of the reaction to “Snow White” raises questions about its potential box office performance.
The film also stars Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, alongside Zegler and Gadot.
