Last year, 2024,  has been the best yet for music streaming on Spotify in Nigeria, especially for a country that just got introduced to the platform barely four years ago.

According to Spotify Stats, an unofficial streaming tracker, Nigerian listeners contributed 2.54 billion of the 149.5 billion global streams in 2024, a cumulative total from daily streams across 365 days.

While the Nigerian market ranks 25th globally in streaming numbers, when taking into account annual growth, it ranks at the very top—a 96.23% increase from the previous year. For reference, Spotify Nigeria recorded 1.30 billion streams in 2023.

In terms of raw numbers, however, the United States, Mexico and Brazil retain their lead, closing 2024 with 43.8 billion, 28.6 billion and 23.6 billion respectively.

2024: A Year of Record-Breaking Growth

Tell-tale signs of the Nigerian market’s insane growth have been glaring throughout last year and even before.

In the first half of 2024 alone, Spotify Nigeria scored a billion streams, nearly doubling the 511.4 million streams recorded during the same period in 2023 and marking the steepest climb among all markets tracked (+96.7%).

To put this enormous growth in an even larger scale, the 2023 half-year figure itself was a 352% leap from the 113 million streams recorded in the first half of 2022.

2024 also saw Spotify Nigeria reset her daily stream personal best thrice, starting in June 27 and peaking at a remarkable 13.5 million streams across its top 200 songs on August 9. This ranked Nigeria as the 20th country globally and one of only 29 nations to have its daily top 200 songs exceed 10 million streams within 24 hours. Also since June 21, Nigeria has consistently maintained its position in the top 25 of the Spotify’s global daily streaming chart.

Nigeria’s upscale in streaming culture, despite piracy still being a huge issue in the country, is thanks vibrant music scene, international appeal of its native genre, Afrobeats, and the unique composition of its 200-million strong population.

Artists like Wizkid, whose sixth studio album, “Morayo,” set the record for highest single-day streams ever in the country—with 21.2 million streams—Asake and Rema, have increasingly found appeal both home and abroad. Considering that Nigeria has one of the highest concentrations of youths anywhere—some of whom are tech-savvy—the quick switch to streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and Audiomack shouldn’t be that surprising.

Statistica’s projection of the number of streaming users and revenue in the country to hit 16 million and $107 million respectively in 2027, is cherry on the cake for a once underrated music market.
