“Superman 2” Trends Online as James Gunn Announces Superman Sequel, Man of Tomorrow
Barely two months after the release of Superman—the first big screen project of the rebranded DC Universe—director James Gunn has confirmed a sequel, Man of Tomorrow, billed to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
Gunn’s announcement post on X features a piece of 2015 artwork by Jim Lee—DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer. The image shows a smiling Superman holding a screwdriver while standing beside a suited-up Lex Luthor in his iconic power armor.
Within minutes, #Superman2 surged into X’s top 25 trending topics, as fans dissected every visual cue for clues about the upcoming film’s storyline.
Superman was released on July 11, 2025 and stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal El, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachael Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Alongside the trio was a host of supporting superhero characters including Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener/Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific and Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl.

Serving as a reboot to Zack Snyder’s 2013 film, Man of Steel, and a launchpad for the new DC Universe under Gunn’s leadership, Superman has been both a critical and commercial success.
As it nears the end of its theatrical run, the film has grossed over $610 million at the worldwide box office ($351 million in North America and $259 internationally), according to box office analyst, Luiz Fernando on X. Notably, this is still behind Man of Steel’s $667 million benchmark.
In-between Superman and Man of Tomorrow lies a DC slate that includes Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl and Clayface. But fans have already started to theorize that Clark holding a screwdriver is a hint to the aid he provides in building Luthor’s war suit against a bigger, mutual enemy.
