“The Jewel,” a futuristic Broadway musical stage production, is set to return for another immersive production in partnership with First Bank and Eko Hotel on Apr. 18 and Apr. 19, 2025, at Eko Hotel, Lagos.
Inspired by Wole Soyinka’s “The Lion and the Jewel” and Ola Rotimi’s “Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again,” the stage play promises to redefine African theatre with its futuristic musical narrative.
Directed by Ice Nweke, founder of Ice Production (“Love Is,” “Prideland”), the company seeks to bridge the gap between the artistic and commercial worlds by producing high-quality performances and innovative creations like “The Jewel.”
According to Nweke, the play is a brilliant, first-of-its-kind, futuristic stage play in the country, where the music, sound, costume, and immersive experience are beyond what anyone has ever seen. The production is a spectacle of theatre, music, power, and drama, and it stars Sharon Aduroja.
“What inspired me is two popular plays by two renowned playwrights. Those plays actually inspired the Broadway musical I am doing this Easter at Eko Hotel. We created a city—an alternate universe where Lagos exists 100 years ahead with everything futuristic, digitized, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology-driven. It will challenge you, even in your own space, to push the boundaries of what you do in set extensions, VFX, and even in applying and using AI, CGI, and augmented reality in your own production pipeline,” he said.
