After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Tim Mielants’ new drama Steve, starring Cillian Murphy, has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 73% critics score.

Based on 16 reviews, the rating has since climbed to 75%, suggesting the potential for further shifts as more reviews come in.

The film centers on a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform college. As Steve struggles to keep the institution alive, he must also contend with his own mental health battles.

Critics have praised the film for its moving storytelling and strong performances, though some reviews noted uneven characterisation.

Produced by Big Things Films, Steve also stars Roger Allam, Emily Watson, Little Simz, Charles Bevean, Marcus Garvey, Jay Lycurgo, and Tracey Ullman.

The project marks a reunion between Mielants and Murphy following their 2024 collaboration on the historical drama Small Things Like These.

Steve is scheduled to open in select theaters on September 19 before arriving on Netflix on October 3, 2025.
