Toyin Abraham has once again flexed her box office prowess as her newest film “Malaika” has earned over ₦284 million after just one month in theaters. The emotional drama has now become Abraham’s highest grossing movie as a producer and director.
The remarkable gross officially makes “Malaika” Abraham’s highest earning film yet, surpassing her previous benchmark set by 2022’s “Ijakumo” which topped out at ₦278 million. It caps a meteoric rise up the ranks to become 10th on the all-time list of highest grossing Nigerian films.
According to figures published on Monday by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), “Malaika” raked in ₦10.9 million over the last weekend to push its total gross higher than Abraham’s previous record-holder “Ijakumo.” That film topped out at ₦278 million in 2022.
Released on Dec. 22, 2024, the film tells the story of a couple struggling with infertility and the strains it puts on their marriage. It stars Abraham herself along with veterans like Emeka Ike and showcases her elite talent both in front of and behind the camera.
Abraham has solidified herself as one of Nollywood’s most reliable hitmakers. With “Malaika” shattering more records, the prolific star filmmaker appears well on her way to even greater box office glory.
