South African artist Tyla, a rising star and recent Grammy winner, will compete in the fiercely competitive pop categories at the 67th Grammy Awards.

Despite submitting her debut album “Tyla” for consideration in the R&B categories, the Recording Academy’s R&B Screening Committee, comprising artists, songwriters, and producers well-versed in the genre, decided that her music aligns more with pop.

If nominated, Tyla will go up against global pop heavyweights such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish. Her debut album, released on March 22, 2024, has already achieved Gold certification in the United States.

However, it was moved out of the “Best R&B Album” category and shifted into the “Best Pop Vocal Album” category.

“Tyla” is a genre-blending project that fuses South African Amapiano, R&B, and Afrobeats, with its Grammy-winning single “Water” being a standout hit.

The Recording Academy’s decision has raised eyebrows, as the singer herself acknowledged at the 2024 VMAs that she views herself more as an R&B artist than an Afrobeats star.

The deluxe version of “Tyla”, titled “Tyla+”, features additional tracks that are deeply rooted in Amapiano and R&B. Some argue that her album would have been better suited for the “Best Progressive R&B Album” category, which allows for albums that mix R&B with other genres like rap, pop, and neo-soul. Earlier in the year, SZA’s record-breaking album “SOS” won in that category.

The nominations for the 67th Grammy Awards will be announced on November 8, 2024, and the ceremony is set to take place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
