UrbanGidi, the production company led by filmmaker Wande Thomas, has announced a collaboration with Showmax to produce a new Nigerian original series titled “Under the Influence.”

The series, directed and written by Thomas alongside a talented team of writers including Isoken Ogiemwonyi, Nengi Diri, Mannie Oiseomaye, and Nicole Chikwe, follows the journey of a young graduate navigating the complexities of Lagos and the digital age. Aimed at Gen Z audiences, “Under the Influence” explores the essence of modern Nigerian youth culture.

Wande Thomas is renowned for his approach to African storytelling. His previous works include the dramedy “Lara of Lagos” (2020), the thriller “Napped” (2021), and the upcoming second season of the Pan-African drama series “The Smart Money Woman” (2024). His anticipated limited thriller series “Spiraling” stars Toni Tones, Folu Storms, and Nollywood veteran Jim Iyke.

Thomas draws inspiration from creators like Donald Glover and Issa Rae, aiming to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the world of celebrities and social media influencers.

Nicole Chikwe, a media personality, beauty entrepreneur, and wife of Nigerian rapper Naeto C, makes her writing debut with “Under the Influence.”

“Under the Influence” promises to be a fresh and captivating addition to Nigerian television, offering an insightful look into the lives of modern youth in Lagos. The project has completed principal photography and is now in post-production.
