Independent film distributor We Are Parable has acquired UK and Ireland distribution rights to “Dreamers”, the directorial debut from acclaimed British producer Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor.

The film, which had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, was nominated for a Teddy Award and is now set for a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland later in 2025.

“Dreamers” follows Ronke, a Nigerian migrant who has been detained after living undocumented in the UK for two years. Convinced that playing by the rules is her only path to freedom, she clashes with a new roommate who challenges her beliefs. As their bond deepens into romance, Ronke must choose between compliance and living authentically.

The film stars Ronke Adékoluẹjo in the lead role, alongside Ann Akinjirin, Diana Yekinni, and Aiysha Hart. Written and directed by Gharoro-Akpojotor, the project was produced by Emily Morgan through Quiddity Films with support from BBC Film and the BFI. International sales were handled by The Yellow Affair.

“Dreamers” marks Gharoro-Akpojotor’s transition from producer to director, following work on projects such as “Boxing Day”—the UK’s first all-Black Christmas film—and the BBC series “Champion.”

Described as a moving and urgent love story set against the backdrop of the UK’s immigration system, “Dreamers” blends social commentary with intimacy and romance, offering a rare look inside life in a detention center.

The film was previously selected for the BFI London Film Festival’s works-in-progress showcase, where it was featured as one of nine notable titles including both fiction and documentary projects.
