Nigerian music superstar, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid, made history as the first African and Nigerian to win the American Music Award.
Wizkid Wins at 2022 American Music Awards

Wizkid emerged as the first artiste to win the recently introduced ‘Favorite Afrobeats Artiste’ category at the American Music Awards.
The 50th edition of the awards was held at Microsoft Theater, California.
Wizkid’s collaboration with Tems on Essence also won in the Favorite R&B Song category at the event just as “Essence” – the 11th track on Wizkid’s fourth studio album, Made in Lagos – continues to clinch awards.
Big Wiz’s latest feat was announced on the verified Twitter account of the award organizers on Sunday, November 20, 2022.
“Congrats to @wizkidayo and @temsbaby! “Essence” won an #AMAs for “Favorite R&B Song!” the tweet read.
Wizkid also defeated fellow music star and countrymen including Burna Boy, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Tems to win the award category.
