In the sea of romantic comedies in Hollywood, there seems to be one that stands out from the pack. In the 2010s, it’s rare to see a genre mix of sports, comedy, and romantic drama in a film, but that is what “Challengers” is offering, and it is bound to be a delight.
Emmy winner Zendaya takes on the leading role of Tasha, a former tennis prodigy turned coach whose mission is to help her tennis-playing husband, Art (Faist), get his A-game back after a losing streak.
Her method of redemption is to organize a “challengers” game where Art faces off against his ex-best friend, Patrick (O’Connor), who also happens to be her ex-lover.
Starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor, the film depicts how murky the waters can be when old love and new love reunite. Add in the intense heat of the game of tennis and a high-profile relationship and you have the perfect film to help get into the summer spirit.
“Challengers” is scheduled for a worldwide premiere on Apr. 26. Watch the trailer here.
