For Oluwanifemi Abodunrin, Dear Ella is more than a film. It is a reminder that every child deserves the chance to dream, learn and experience the joy of childhood, regardless of their circumstances.
Speaking with The Nollywood Reporter (TNR), the writer and producer of the Ademola Adebisi-directed film said the story was inspired by children whose hopes are often limited by poverty.
“I have always believed that every child deserves to simply be a child, to dream, learn, play and experience the joy of childhood,” she said.
“It breaks my heart to see children watch others enjoy the life they wish they had, standing on the sidelines with nothing but hope.”
Abodunrin said Dear Ella was created to remind such children that their dreams matter and that difficult circumstances do not have to define their futures.

“Their dreams are valid, they are seen, and no circumstance is too impossible for God to change. Sometimes, all it takes is one day for a dream to become reality.”
She revealed that the inspiration for the film came through what she describes as the guidance of the Holy Spirit, adding that the story reflects her Christian belief in Jesus’ love and care for children.
According to Abodunrin, the film explores three central themes: a mother’s love, the importance of education and the belief that every child’s dream is worth pursuing.
“A mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces in the world, and I wanted to celebrate that,” she said.
She added that education remains one of the greatest tools for transforming a child’s future.
“Finally, I wanted every child watching to know that no dream is too small or too impossible. Every dream is valid, and every child deserves the chance to pursue it.”
Reflecting on her dual role as writer and producer, Abodunrin said she enjoyed every stage of the filmmaking process, describing collaboration as the biggest adjustment rather than a challenge.
“Collaboration often makes the story even stronger, and I’m grateful for everyone who helped bring Dear Ella to life,” she said.

Beyond the film itself, Abodunrin hopes Dear Ella encourages children not to give up on their dreams of getting an education, while reminding adults of the impact a single act of kindness can have on a child’s future.
“One act of kindness. One opportunity. One decision to truly see a child can completely rewrite their future.”
Dear Ella is currently streaming on Kingsview.
