DreamWorks Animation has officially announced the eagerly awaited return of Shrek, “everyone’s” favorite ogre, in “Shrek 5,” set for release on July 1, 2026. This announcement marks 16 years since the previous installment, “Shrek Forever After,” and 23 years since the original “Shrek” captivated audiences in 2001.
The news, shared via DreamWorks’ X (formerly Twitter) account, came without plot details, keeping fans in suspense. However, it has been confirmed that Mike Myers will once again voice the titular character, with Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy reprising their roles as Princess Fiona and Donkey, respectively.
Walt Dohrn, who voiced Rumpelstiltskin and other characters in past Shrek films, will take on the role of director for this new installment. Dohrn’s previous work as a story artist in the Shrek franchise and his directorial experience in the Trolls series positions him well to lead this project.
Eddie Murphy had hinted at a new Shrek movie back in June, revealing to Collider that he would be voicing Donkey in a stand-alone film, sparking excitement among fans.
The Shrek franchise, which includes the successful “Puss in Boots” spinoffs, boasts over $4 billion in box office earnings, $2 billion in home video sales, and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for the first film in 2001. The anticipation for “Shrek 5” is further fueled by the success of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2022.
