Nollywood actor Lateef Adedimeji’s announcement of his upcoming movie “Lisabi” has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media, primarily due to his choice of director and concerns over repetitive casting.
The controversy erupted less than 24 hours after Adedimeji revealed that Niyi Akinmolayan would direct the film. Akinmolayan has become a polarizing figure due to his political views and stance on national issues.
Critics on X, formerly Twitter, argue that Adedimeji’s decision to work with Akinmolayan is unwise, given the director’s controversial reputation. Some fans expressed concern that the collaboration could negatively impact the film’s reception.
“This movie cannot fly anywhere,” one X user commented. “Niyi omo eru, you have the gut to produce Yoruba movie a tribe you so much denigrated.”
The backlash extends beyond Akinmolayan’s involvement to the repetitive casting in recent Yoruba epic films. Fans point out that actors Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Itele Yekini, Eniola Ajao, and Lateef Adedimeji himself have starred in at least two of the recent productions “Orisha,” “JagunJagun,” “Kesari,” “Ajakaju,” and “Lakatabu.”
Critics argue that this recurring ensemble stifles opportunities for emerging talent and leads to stagnation in the industry. They call for more diverse casting to encourage creativity and provide fresh faces for audiences.
Akinmolayan responded to the criticism on social media, stating, “I’ve grown a thick skin.” He suggested that his detractors should learn more about his name and values before judging him.
Despite the uproar, both Akinmolayan and Adedimeji have largely remained silent on the matter, fueling further speculation among fans.
“Lisabi” is set to premiere on Netflix on September 21, 2024, with some fans worried about its reception given the controversy, while others remain hopeful that Adedimeji’s star power will prevail.
