Tron: Ares, Warner Bros.’ sequel to the science fiction film, Tron: Legacy, has grossed ₦39.7 million in its first full week at the Nigerian box office.

This comprises the ₦27 million opening weekend (including ₦3 million in previews) and weekday earnings averaging ₦2.9 million, according to data compiled by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

Tron: Ares’ ₦39 million week cume was enough to put it past all competitors except Gingerrr’s ₦69.2 million. However it wasn’t enough to save the film’s larger global outlook.

Following an underwhelming $60.5 million global launch, Tron: Ares’ second weekend dropped a harsh 58%, grossing just $11.1 million domestically (down from $25 million debut) and $14.1 million across 53 international markets—buoyed slightly thanks to a modest $2.8 million Chinese debut—for a second weekend gross of $25.2 million.

Tron: Ares may have crossed the $100 million mark ($54 million domestic and $48.4 million overseas), such a figure offers little comfort for a production that reportedly cost $180 million.

Worse still, projections suggest no sign of recovery. Box office analyst Luiz Fernando estimates that Tron: Ares is unlikely to surpass $160 million worldwide, setting the stage for yet another box office disappointment for lead star Jared Leto.
