Superhero franchises are back this summer as studios like DC and Marvel prepare their heavy-hitters for what promises to be a box office season to remember.
First on the release list is the new and improved version of “Superman,” set to fly into theaters internationally on July 11, 2025.
Marking the official launch of the new DC Universe (DCU), the film breaks away from the tone of “Man of Steel” (2013) while staying true to the comic book roots that have defined Superman’s legacy. Here, Clark Kent is already established as Superman, juggling his double life as both a hero and a reporter at The Daily Planet. But this time, the focus shifts inward, exploring his emotional struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with the human values he learned growing up in Smallville.
The story also delves into his tense ideological clashes with arch-nemesis Lex Luthor and his complex relationship with fellow reporter Lois Lane. In the trailer, she questions his choices and the consequences of his actions, which have drawn intense public scrutiny.
“Superman” stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
James Gunn—co-CEO of DC Studios—serves as director, writer, and producer, working alongside fellow CEO Peter Safran. This new chapter in the DCU is clearly a labor of love for both, following years of criticism aimed at the previous cinematic universe. “Superman” officially kicks off the DCU’s new era, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Shot entirely on IMAX-certified cameras, the film completed principal photography in July 2024.
As one of the most anticipated films of 2025, a lot has gone into the marketing of “Superman”—not as a film that focuses solely on the Man of Steel’s superhuman powers, but as one that humanizes him. Rather than relying heavily on CGI spectacle in early promos, DC Studios has emphasized Gunn’s creative vision, character-driven storytelling, and the emotional core of Superman’s identity.
