Director Bong Joon-ho, known for the Academy-award-winning film “Parasite,” is back with another project, this time set in outer space.
“Mickey 17” will premiere in theatres internationally on March 7, 2025. Before its international release, it will debut at the Berlin International Film Festival on Feb. 28, 2025.
The film stars Robert Pattinson in his first lead role since 2022’s “The Batman.” He plays a peculiar individual who, fed up with life on Earth, enrolls himself as an “expendable” employee in a space program. Versions of him multiply and die at different periods and corners of space, but one of his versions-Mickey 17-unintentionally survives an attack and goes head-to-head with another new version, Mickey 18.
Based on Edward Ashton’s book of the same name, “Mickey 17” also stars Naomie Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Colette, and Mark Ruffalo.
It is no surprise that Pattinson has picked this specific role for his Hollywood comeback. Since branching out of the “Twilight” mayhem, the actor has been known to choose characters that are unorthodox, unusual, and distinctive. He played a brooding Batman in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” became public enemy number one in the controversial film “Tenet,” and dawned on religious regalia for his role as a self-righteous reverend father in “The Devil All the Time.”
“Mickey 17” may have faced several setbacks before its release-the SAG-AFTRA strike, scheduling conflicts of the actors, and the COVID-19 pandemic-but it is projected to make a cinematic splash. It transcends the borders of conventional sci-fi by raising questions about what it means to be human in a world where life and death have become commodities.
“Mickey 17” is a collaborative effort between Plan B Entertainment, Offscreen, and Kate Street Picture Company. Film distribution will be handled by Warner Brothers.
