Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, better known as AY, will see his latest comedy The Waiter arrive on Netflix on September 12, 2025, months after its theatrical debut.

The film follows Akpos, a clumsy hotel waiter whose chain of blunders spirals out of control during a hostage incident, unexpectedly turning him into a national hero.

Directed by Toka McBaror, the movie features a star-studded lineup including Regina Daniels, Deyemi Okanlawon, Shaffy Bello, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Kunle Remi, Toke Makinwa, Williams Uchemba, Brain Jotter, and Rahama Sadau.

Released in cinemas on December 20, 2024, The Waiter joined a crowded holiday season that saw major Nollywood releases such as Alakada: Bad and Boujee, Everybody Loves Jenifa, and Thinline.

Despite stiff competition, it performed strongly at the box office, crossing the ₦200 million mark within weeks before finishing with over ₦300 million in early 2025.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, audiences embraced its blend of slapstick humor and action-driven spectacle, making it one of the season’s unexpected successes.

With its upcoming Netflix release, The Waiter will reach international audiences, further extending AY’s track record of commercially successful comedies and Nollywood’s growing visibility on streaming platforms.
