Disney has officially announced plans to adapt its 2010 animated hit “Tangled” into a live-action film.
The news has thrilled fans of the beloved classic, marking it as the latest in a series of live-action adaptations following “Snow White“, “Hercules“, and “Lilo & Stitch”. Both “Snow White” and “Lilo & Stitch” have already secured 2025 release dates.
The live-action “Tangled” is still in its early stages, but the studio is reportedly assembling a top-tier creative team to capture the humor, charm, and emotional depth of the original. Michael Gracey, known for directing “The Greatest Showman”, is currently in talks to helm the project. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, celebrated for her work on “Thor: Love and Thunder”, “Do Revenge”, and “Someone Great”, is set to pen the script.
Casting for key roles, including Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and Mother Gothel, has not yet been finalized. However, fans have already begun speculating about potential actors. Singers Sabrina Carpenter and Rosé have been fan-cast as Rapunzel, with Rosé recently expressing interest in portraying the character. Taylor Zakhar Perez has emerged as a fan favorite for Flynn Rider, thanks to his striking resemblance to the animated counterpart. Meanwhile, Kathryn Hahn has been widely suggested for Mother Gothel, praised for her ability to portray layered and manipulative characters.
“Tangled” is a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale. The story follows a spirited princess with magical golden hair, confined to a tower by the cunning Mother Gothel. When the roguish thief Flynn Rider unexpectedly enters her life, she embarks on a thrilling journey of self-discovery and freedom.
The original film, featuring voice performances by Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy, premiered 14 years ago to critical acclaim.
“Tangled” holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $592 million globally. It was nominated for multiple awards, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, and two Grammys. In 2012, its standout track “I See the Light” won a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Over the years, “Tangled” has expanded its legacy through related media, including a short film, a television series, a manga adaptation, and a Broadway production.
