January 2025 is set to close on a positive note for the Nigerian box office, with estimates indicating roughly 330,000 admissions—an increase from the 324,300 recorded in January 2024.
While official figures are yet to be released, projections from Nigerian Box Office on X suggest a 6–10% growth in ticket sales compared to the previous year.
This improvement comes despite a slow start to the year, where box office revenue from the top 10 films dropped by 48% in the first week. Earnings fell from ₦1.16 billion at the end of 2024 to just ₦600 million.
However, the figures still fall short of the record-breaking 3 million-plus admissions recorded in January 2021 and 2022, when economic conditions were more favorable, with lower inflation and stronger consumer spending power.
The month’s performance has been driven by titles such as “Everybody Loves Jenifa”, “Alakada: Bad and Boujee”, “The Waiter”, “Mufasa”, and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. In comparison, January 2024 was dominated by “A Tribe Called Judah”, “Malaika”, and “Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom”.
Looking ahead, February could see further growth, especially with the release of Captain America: Brave New World during the Valentine’s Day holiday. If it performs as well as “Deadpool & Wolverine”, the Nigerian box office may experience a notable boost.
