Nnamdi Kanaga’s upcoming supernatural horror film, “Water Girl”, is generating buzz with the release of its chilling teaser trailer. Written and directed by the Nigerian-born, U.S.-based filmmaker, the film explores deep-rooted themes from Igbo mythology.
The story follows a woman who, after several miscarriages, finally becomes a mother—only to discover that her child is an Ogbanje, a spirit child believed in Igbo culture to be cursed to die and be reborn repeatedly to the same mother.
“Water Girl” features an impressive ensemble cast of Nigerian and international actors, including Stella Damasus, Kenneth Okolie, Florence Onuma, Moriyah Faith, Oliver Haeden, Nick Wilder, and Jenna Ciralli.
The film is produced in partnership with cinematographer and co-producer Jennings Barmore, a Montana native and Montana State University Film Studies graduate. Additionally, Stella Damasus contributes as a co-producer on this groundbreaking project.

Drawing heavily from African mythology—particularly Igbo beliefs about children born of the spirit realm—“Water Girl” was shot entirely in the United States.
Already making waves on the festival circuit, “Water Girl” earned multiple accolades at the Flathead Lake International Cinefest, including Best Picture. It has also been officially selected to screen at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and the Caribbean Film Festival this year.
This project marks Kanaga’s third directorial effort, following “Talisman” (2019) and “The Hail Mary” (2020). With “Water Girl,” Kanaga continues to solidify his role in the growing community of African filmmakers expanding the boundaries of international cinema.
While an official release date has yet to be announced, Kanaga assures fans that “Water Girl” will premiere soon.
