After years of anticipation, DreamWorks Animation has finally unveiled the teaser trailer for “Shrek 5”, reigniting excitement—and controversy—among fans.
The film, set for a theatrical release on Dec. 23, 2026, marks the return of the iconic franchise that defined a generation of animated storytelling.
The teaser immediately sparked a wave of nostalgia, with longtime fans thrilled to see the return of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.
Social media was flooded with reactions, as many shared fond memories of growing up with the “Shrek” series, hailing the upcoming installment as a long-overdue reunion with their childhood.
However, not all responses were enthusiastic. A major point of contention is the film’s animation style, which some fans argue is a drastic departure from the original “Shrek” aesthetic. Many took to online platforms to express disappointment, claiming the visual changes make the characters feel unfamiliar.
Adding to the controversy are allegations that DreamWorks may have used artificial intelligence to generate parts of the animation. Speculation intensified after eagle-eyed viewers pointed out subtle differences in character expressions and textures that some believe lack the handcrafted charm of traditional animation. The studio has yet to address these concerns.
Despite the mixed reception, the teaser does introduce fresh elements, including Zendaya as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter. Her presence adds a new dynamic to the franchise, with early glimpses suggesting she will bring a humorous contrast to her parents’ eccentric behavior.
The teaser also features a clever nod to “Shrek’s” lasting internet fame, with a scene where the ogre hilariously reacts to meme versions of himself via the Magic Mirror.

Directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, “Shrek 5” is produced by Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
As one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, with $6.3 billion in earnings across box office sales, merchandise, and adaptations, the “Shrek” legacy remains undeniable.
Whether the upcoming film will live up to expectations—or face further backlash—remains to be seen.
