After opening with $217 million last weekend, James Gunn’s “Superman” grossed a $102 million global total in its second weekend at the box office, according to Variety.
Domestically the DC reboot of the Man of Steel earned $57.2 million, a -54% decline from the $122 million of its opening weekend, and $45.2 million overseas, a -57% drop.
Compared to fellow DC flicks released in the 21st century, “Superman’s -54% second-weekend dip ranks tenth, but in terms of raw numbers, the $57.2 million gross ranks fifth—just below “The Dark Knight” ($75 million), “The Batman” ($66 million), “The Dark Knight Rises” ($62 million) and “Wonder Woman” ($58 million)
During the weekdays, “Superman” also held up nicely, earning $17 million on Tuesday, $11 million on Wednesday, $10.9 million on Thursday.
At the time of this writing, the global cume “Superman” stands at $406 million, of which $235 million comes from North America and $225 million from over 71 overseas markets.
With Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” debuting next week, Kal El’s legs may be heavily affected. Till then, analysts are projecting at least a $600 million finish for “Superman,” which will put it just below the $668 million of “Man of Steel” (2013) as the highest-grossing Superman solo outing of all time.
