The Tribeca Film Festival has announced a pioneering collaboration with OpenAI to feature five original short films made with the company’s yet-to-be-released “Sora” model, marking a bold step in embracing AI-generated content.

On Friday, May 30, 2024, the festival revealed the program, which aims to expose filmmakers to new methods in filmmaking and explore creative storytelling in formerly impossible ways.

“Sora” differs from other AI models due to its ability to manage videos of up to 60 seconds, while other models could only handle clips of 6-8 seconds in length. It allows distinct background characters with the ability to view the same scene from different perspectives, while restricting sex or violence.

As more storytellers incorporate AI in their work and the acceptance of AI in creative storytelling begins to increase, Tribeca’s dedication of an entire section to AI-generated films reflects a belief in the role of AI in future entertainment.

Although AI films have gradually made their way to film festivals, films made with OpenAI’s “Sora” will be used at film festivals for the first time. While “Sora” is still not available to the public, OpenAI has given five directors early access to the program as long as they agree to the filmmaking terms surrounding AI.

Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about the infusion of AI in creativity, saying, “Stories come to us in many forms – whether as a feature film, an immersive experience, a piece of art, or even an AI-generated short film. The inclusion of AI-generated content at Tribeca is a bold step forward, reflecting our commitment to embracing new technologies that enhance the art of storytelling.”

The AI-generated films will premiere at the Tribeca Film Center Screening Room on June 15, 2024.
