Uzor Arukwe and Bisola Aiyeola are set to lead Love in Lagos: An African Reimagination of Romeo and Juliet, a new stage production written by Mofe Duncan and produced by M54 Studios.
The production promises a full sensory experience, blending theatre, music, fashion, dance and cultural immersion. It will run from October 3 to 4 before concluding on October 10 with performances across London, Manchester and Coventry.
Set in post-independence Lagos, the play follows the political rivalry between two influential families after a vacant federal constituency seat ignites a bitter contest for power. On one side are the Adeyemis, a Yoruba family whose roots trace back to the founding of Lagos; on the other are the Okonkwos, an Igbo family whose wealth and enterprise helped shape the constituency.
The conflict takes an unexpected turn when the Adeyemis’ eldest son and the Okonkwos’ only daughter meet during an Egungun festival and fall in love. Their relationship offers both families a rare opportunity for reconciliation, but neither is willing to set aside generations of rivalry.
