What sparked your passion for makeup artistry, and how did you break into the Nigerian entertainment industry?
I studied Theatre Arts, but I wasn’t interested in practicing. During an ASUU strike, my friends and I decided to learn new skills. While some focused on costume design, bag making, and other crafts, I chose makeup. I wanted to help my friends with their work, and that was the start of it. A friend who worked at FilmOne eventually connected me with the industry. Before that, I had been doing stage productions, especially with Bolanle Austin Peters, and I even worked on “Bling Lagosians.” After taking a short break, a friend submitted my name to work on set, and that’s when I returned to the industry. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come since then.
How do you adapt makeup techniques to enhance different skin tones and facial features common among Nigerian actresses?
It’s easy if you understand facial structures and skin tones. Knowing the skin type of the person you’re working with also makes it easier. I like to read the scripts because they provide insight into the character’s background and how they should look at a particular time. For example, if a female character is waking up in the morning, she would likely wear minimal makeup. Scripts often give clues about the look you’re going for, which is why reading them is important.

What are three essential products in your kit that you can’t work without?
My brushes, beauty blenders, and setting spray. These are non-negotiable for me. I have been using my brushes for a long time, and I’m accustomed to how they work for me. While actresses often have their own makeup, I prefer to work with my brushes because they help me achieve the best results.
What’s your approach to creating long-lasting makeup looks in Nigeria’s climate?
Understanding skin prep and the weather is crucial. The Nigerian climate is unique, and outdoor events often cause oil to emerge on the skin. If you know this, you can make sure the skin prep is done properly to ensure the makeup stays in place. If someone has oily skin, I would typically use a mattifying primer. For dry skin, I lean towards hydrating primers. Skin prep is key to achieving a long-lasting look in this climate.
How do you achieve a natural, flawless makeup look?
I believe less is more. When working on a look, I prefer to keep things minimal—less foundation, minimal eyeshadow. The goal is to still see the person for who they are. The makeup should enhance their natural features, not mask them. I keep everything simple, seamless, and soft, so the person still looks like themselves, just with a polished touch.

Which international makeup trends should Nigerian women embrace or avoid?
I think Nigerian women should embrace highlighting, bronzing, and contouring as these techniques define the face beautifully. I don’t believe there’s any trend we should avoid because makeup evolves every year. For example, there was a time when bright under-eyes were popular, but now the trend is to keep them subtle while still making them pop. Ultimately, it’s about what works for you personally and what makes you feel confident.
What makeup techniques do you recommend for our readers who want to achieve a camera-ready look for their own special occasions?
Stick to minimalism. Use little foundation, powder, setting spray, and ensure your skin is properly prepped. Factor in the time you’ll wear the makeup and the setting—whether it’s indoors or outdoors. It’s essential to use minimal colors to keep the look natural. The goal is to look like an enhanced version of yourself, not like someone else entirely.
