Zootopia 2 has surged to a historic global debut, earning $556 million in its opening weekend and breaking multiple industry records across key markets.
The animated sequel is now the biggest worldwide launch for an animated film and the highest-opening film ever recorded in China.
Industry analyst Luiz Fernando reports that in the U.S., the film collected $156 million across the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. This places it ahead of Frozen 2 ($125M) and behind only Moana 2 ($225.4M) for the all-time Thanksgiving frame.
Internationally, the sequel delivered $400 million across 52 markets. China led the surge with a remarkable $271.8 million opening weekend, including a $104.8 million single-day debut, making Zootopia 2 the first Hollywood production to cross the $100 million mark in a single day at the Chinese box office. It surpassed Avengers: Endgame’s previous $97.5 million record.
On its first Saturday in China, the film generated $107 million, a figure topped only once in global box-office history, also by Endgame with $109 million on its first U.S. Saturday.

Worldwide, the film’s $556 million opening pushed it past Ne Zha 2, which held the nine-month record for the largest animated debut. Across all genres, only Avengers: Endgame ($1.2B), Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5M), and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600.5M) rank higher.
Zootopia 2 is already among the year’s top ten highest-grossing titles and is projected to exceed the totals of How to Train Your Dragon ($636M), Superman ($616.7M), and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ($598M) by next weekend.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the film reunites Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, with the duo returning to tackle a new threat in an expanded Zootopia. Analysts say the franchise’s renewed momentum, wider setting, and broader ensemble have strengthened its appeal across global markets.
The film is also building strong word of mouth in China, where its performance signals renewed interest in Hollywood animation. Analysts predict Zootopia 2 could become one of the fastest titles to reach $1 billion worldwide.
Whether it will challenge Ne Zha 2’s $2.2 billion record as the highest-grossing animated film of all time will be clearer by its third weekend.
