Mike Ezuruonye’s Yoruba Skills Are Smoother Than You Think

For someone who looks like the quintessential Igbo boy, Mike Ezuruonye is a man of many tongues. Allow us to explain.

Back in 2018, during an interview he confidently declared he had “gone beyond Nollywood.” At 41, the Abia-born actor—who’s been taking fewer lead roles in recent years—has often hinted at life away from the limelight. He’s even flirted with the idea of diving into politics. But recent developments suggest that he might have a hidden talent for the lingual arts as well.

In a forty-three-second skit by Kama Statement, an angry Ezuruonye delivers a string of perfect Yoruba phrases, leaving both his co-star Kama and viewers absolutely stunned. Fans were equally in shock—how was this quintessential Igbo man so fluent in Yoruba?

“Omo see as Yoruba sweet for this man mouth oo, even sàbí pass me sef,” one fan freaked out on X.

“The way he switched up killed me,” exclaimed another shocked fan.

“His Yoruba is extra smooth,” added yet another.

Reminding others of the perks of living in Yoruba land, one fan wrote: “When you stay in Lagos for long, what do you expect?”

Now, for those still reeling from the shock, a quick PSA: If you’d watched “Unforgivable”, you would’ve known about Ezuruonye’s Yoruba chops. In the 2013 movie, where he starred alongside Yoruba film heavyweights like Dayo Amusa, Desmond Elliot, Iyabo Ojo, and Fathia Balogun, Mike more than held his own in Yoruba.

If the Kama skit and “Unforgivable” were isolated incidents, we might have brushed off his Yoruba as a one-off.

However, events earlier this year betray his polyglot side.

In January, a video of the actor fluently speaking Twi while in Ghana trended on social media. Despite Mike claiming it was his first attempt, native Twi speakers were impressed with his effort, calling it “surprisingly good.”

At this point, we don’t know which direction Ezuruonye’s career will take next, but it’s clear the man’s got options. If he ever gets tired of Nollywood—or politics—he might just open a linguistics school!
