In an interview with The Nollywood Reporter, creative producer and current Film Independent Fellow Bofan Zhang shed light on the global misconceptions surrounding Chinese cinema and her efforts to showcase its diversity and innovation.
When asked about the biggest misconception about Chinese cinema globally, Zhang remarked, “ I’d say many global audiences probably often associate Chinese cinema with historical epics or martial arts films. While those genres are indeed a significant part of our cinematic heritage, they represent only a small slice of the storytelling happening in China today.”
Zhang explained that while Chinese cinema is incredibly open to external influences and eager for innovation, strict censorship systems often push filmmakers to work within “safe zones,” resulting in themes that align with these global stereotypes.
“That said, there’s a wealth of innovative projects being made in China, and I genuinely hope Chinese cinema can find more pathways to go global in the future,” she added.
A graduate of Columbia University’s MFA Creative Producing program, Zhang has gained recognition for her work on films like “BLEEDING” and “CHILDREN OF LIGHT”. These projects delve into social realities and individuality, offering nuanced narratives that challenge the limited perceptions of Chinese storytelling.
Zhang’s experience working in China, South Korea, and the United States has given her a unique perspective, enabling her to blend cultural elements into her work while retaining its authenticity. Her recent exploration of vertical storytelling further underscores her commitment to innovation, as she adapts to modern viewing habits without compromising cinematic quality.
As a Film Independent Fellow, Zhang is part of a growing movement of filmmakers seeking to elevate Chinese cinema on the global stage. Her work not only highlights the diversity of Chinese narratives but also paves the way for greater cross-cultural collaboration in filmmaking.
Through her projects, Zhang hopes to inspire a broader understanding of Chinese cinema, challenging the stereotypes that have long defined its global image.
