Veteran actor Dele Odule has outlined the vision behind his proposed OPEREKETE Entertainment, Arts and Research Centre, describing it as a platform focused on training, research, and cultural preservation.

In an interview with The Nollywood Reporter (TNR), he explained that the project is designed to serve as a structured environment for creative development across disciplines.

He clarified that the initiative is not intended as a conventional film village but as a space for learning and skill development. According to him, the centre will train and retrain practitioners in theatre, fine arts, and applied arts, while still accommodating film-related practice within its broader framework.

“The place is not actually meant for filming alone. It’s designed to train and re-train artists and those who intend to go into theatre, fine and applied arts,” he said, stressing the project’s emphasis on long-term capacity building within the creative sector.

Beyond its training focus, Odule said the centre will also function as a research-driven institution dedicated to documenting and preserving Nigerian arts and culture. He noted that the project is designed to serve both present and future generations through knowledge development and archival work.

“Our mission is to protect, preserve and probably disseminate information as regards arts and culture,” he said, adding that the initiative responds to broader concerns about cultural continuity within the industry.

He linked the project to what he described as a gradual decline in awareness of Nigeria’s artistic heritage, particularly among younger creatives. According to him, many early contributors to theatre and film are no longer adequately recognised in the industry’s current landscape.

“Our heroes past have been directly or indirectly forgotten,” he said, pointing to a gap between the industry’s growth and its historical consciousness. He added that this disconnect has shaped the urgency behind the project.

Referencing figures such as Hubert Ogunde and Adeyemi Afolayan, Odule said their contributions remain foundational to Nigerian storytelling. He questioned the level of awareness among emerging practitioners and stressed the need for intentional efforts to preserve such legacies.

“How many of our youths living in arts today can say anything about them?” he asked, highlighting the importance of bridging generational knowledge gaps within the creative space.

Odule explained that the OPEREKETE Arts Centre is designed to address this gap by combining practical training with historical and cultural education. He added that the initiative will also explore partnerships that support structured learning in theatre and related disciplines.

In addition to its educational focus, the centre will incorporate elements of cultural expression beyond performance, including the promotion of indigenous food and clothing. He noted that these elements are intended to reinforce cultural identity within the space.

“Our local foods and clothes will be encouraged for sales,” he said, describing the project as one that reflects everyday Nigerian culture in both practice and experience.

Odule, who rose to prominence with Ti Oluwa Ni Ile (1993), has remained active across Yoruba and mainstream Nollywood productions over the years.
