In celebration of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 100th anniversary, a new Princess is coming to town and her name is Asha. She will be starring in the studio’s latest animated musical feature titled “Wish.” Out Nov. 22, the film chronicles her journey in the small but mighty Kingdom of Rosas. In a desperate attempt to save her people from the hands of manipulative King Magnifico, Asha makes a wish upon a star. Her wish is granted by an otherworldly character named Star and they team up to save the people of Rosas from bondage.
“Wish” pays homage to the Disney films before by featuring the “Wishing Star” technique. The technique involves Disney characters (mostly the Princesses) wishing upon a star in the dead of night. Once they do that, “anything their heart desires” will come true. “Wishing Star” has become Disney’s signature and a pop culture phenomenon, so much so that it has its own song: “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
Oscar winner, Ariana DeBose takes on the lead role as Asha and she is joined by Chris Pine who stars as King Magnifico. Joining them are Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Evan Peters, Ramy Youssef, and Jon Rudnitsky.
The art style for the film features a combination of Disney’s signature watercolor animation and computer animation. “Wish” was written by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore; Chris Buck (“Frozen”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Lost Dragon”) serve as directors and Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes as producers.
The songwriting duo of Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice have reportedly penned down seven songs for the film, including the powerful ballad “This Wish” sung by Debose.
