Universal Pictures has set an Aug. 6, 2027 release date for Snoop, an R-rated biopic chronicling the life and career of rap icon Snoop Dogg.
Jonathan Daviss, best known for Netflix’s Outer Banks, will star as the legendary rapper in a film Universal describes as a comprehensive portrait of his journey as both a recording artist and business mogul.
Craig Brewer (Song Sung Blue) will direct the film, which will feature music from Snoop Dogg’s catalogue, including “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “Gin and Juice,” “What’s My Name?” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”
Universal has yet to reveal the film’s narrative scope, leaving it unclear whether it will chronicle Snoop’s entire career or focus on a defining chapter of his life, as seen in music biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody.
Since emerging in the early 1990s, Snoop Dogg has built a career spanning music, film, television, business, and entrepreneurship. He first gained national attention in 1992 after appearing on Dr. Dre’s “Deep Cover” before playing a prominent role on Dre’s landmark debut album, The Chronic.
Universal first announced the project in 2022, and Snoop recently revealed at CinemaCon that production is expected to begin this summer. The film will also mark the first release under Universal’s overall deal with Death Row Pictures, Snoop Dogg’s production company.
