Award show season has officially kicked off with the Golden Globes! The 2025 ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser on Jan. 5, was an unforgettable evening filled with surprise victories, deserving wins, emotional speeches, and milestones that will be remembered for years to come. The ceremony celebrated the achievements in film and television in the past year, bringing Hollywood’s biggest stars together under one roof.

French crime musical, “Emilia Perez,” starring Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Selena Gomez, was the biggest winner in the film category with four awards: Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, Best Motion Picture-Non-English Language, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture for Saldana. Despite a resume that dates back to the 1990s and being the fourth-highest-grossing actor of all time, this is her first major award show honor.

Demi Moore earned her first Golden Globe award after over four decades in the film industry for her enthralling performance in the horror film “The Substance.” In her emotional acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, she shared an experience of a producer labeling her a “popcorn actress” whose only goal was to get people to watch films without receiving formal recognition. Reflecting on her film journey of over 45 years, she offered an empowering message to those who have ever felt like they were never enough. “….You can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.”

Another first win was for Brazil’s very own Fernanda Torres whose captivating performance as an activist in the political biographical film “I’m Still Here” earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama. She made history as the first Brazilian actress to win in that category.

Indie animation “Flow” surpassed all expectations by winning Best Animated Film. It beat top contenders like “The Wild Robot” and “Inside Out 2” for the coveted award, earning acclaim from fans who praised it for its innovative animation and use of no dialogue to drive the narrative.

Crowd-pleaser “Wicked” earned a well-deserved Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The musical fantasy film, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is now the highest-grossing musical adaptation of all time, with over $680 million made at the global box office.

To the surprise of no one, A24’s “The Brutalist” won three awards at the ceremony, including Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for Adrien Brody. It marks his first win after being previously nominated in 2003 for “The Pianist.” These wins will no doubt impact independent filmmaking as A24 is slowly but surely proving that ambitious, auteur-driven projects can succeed outside the traditional studio system.

Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano became first-time winners thanks to their outstanding performances in the FX/Hulu project which is ranked as one of the best television series released in 2024.

“Baby Reindeer” and “Hacks” earned two awards each. Colin Farell won his third Golden Globe for his image-altering portrayal of the eponymous DC villain “The Penguin.” Jodie Foster, Jeremy Allen White, and Jessica Gunning also earned awards in the television category.
