Nicole Asinugo’s “God Knows Best” to Screen at 2025 Cannes Film Festival
Nigerian filmmaker and screenwriter Nicole Asinugo is set to make her directorial debut with the short film “God Knows Best,” which will have its first private screening on May 19, 2025, at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.
The short film, starring Wini Efon of Cannes-selected “My Father’s Shadow”, will screen as part of Nigeria’s official programme during the festival.
The screening coincides with that of Izu Ojukwu’s “77: The Festac Conspiracy”, another film selected by the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) to represent the country at the festival.
“God Knows Best” tells the compelling story of Simi, a resilient young widow who, after the loss of her husband, takes unconventional steps to provide for her children.

Following her screenwriting work on “Living in Bondage: Breaking Free” and “Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story,” the project signals Asinguo’s shift to a writer-director.
Produced by Ifeoluwa Fatogun, winner of the AMVCA 2025 Best Documentary award, “God Knows Best” also marks the inaugural project from Asinugo’s newly founded storytelling agency, Write Good Stories.
As of the time of this report, there is no definite date for its public viewing, except for the official poster and trailer for the short film.
