A night of heritage, myth, and modern cinema as Nollywood’s first Benin-language epic makes its grand Lagos debut.
“Osamede” Lagos Premiere Lights Up Lekki’s Genesis Cinema
Nollywood’s first major Benin-language epic, Osamede, illuminated the Purple Mall’s Genesis Cinema in Lekki on October 12 during its glamorous Lagos premiere.
Written by Lolo Eremie, the fantasy drama follows an orphaned girl who discovers her spiritual bond with the legendary Aruosa stone — a sacred artifact believed to embody divine power in ancient Benin mythology. As colonial forces encroach on her homeland, she must rise as an unlikely guardian of a legacy that predates the Benin Empire itself.
The premiere drew a distinguished crowd that included the film’s stars Ivie Okujaye, William Benson, Lexan Aisosa Peters, and Austrian-born actor Andreas Fritzer. Director James Omokwe, cinematographer Charles Olegeh, and producer Lillian Olubi were also in attendance, joined by industry figures such as media personality IK Osakioduwa, Dark October star Chuks Joseph, and Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole. Many guests arrived dressed in Benin-inspired traditional attire, reflecting the evening’s cultural theme.
Following earlier screenings at the Cannes Film Market on May 17 and in Benin City on October 10, Osamede received a standing ovation in Lagos. The event continued with an engaging Q&A session hosted by Osakioduwa, during which Olubi remarked:
“We often talk about what the white men did to us and not what we did to ourselves. This film talks about the enemy from within. It’s a story of restitution — the restitution of our story and culture.”
Director Omokwe also recalled a near-kidnapping incident during filming in Benin involving “five men in military uniform,” expressing gratitude that the crew persevered and resumed production two weeks later.
“Looking back, I’m thankful we didn’t give up. If we had, we wouldn’t be here talking about this incredible story today,” he said.
Speaking with The Nollywood Reporter, Omokwe addressed the film’s brief AI-generated flashback sequence, which he created himself:
“AI is a tool, and it’s here to stay. As long as it doesn’t replace the human essence of filmmaking, it can be a powerful creative ally.”
Filmed on location in Fugar and Ososo, Edo State, Osamede stands as Nollywood’s first Benin-language epic with nationwide distribution. Lead actors Okujaye and Benson underwent intensive language training to deliver authentic performances, with Benson portraying the film’s formidable antagonist, General Iyase.
Osamede opens in cinemas across Nigeria on October 17 and in the United Kingdom on October 31.
