The 35th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards launched the film awards season with a celebration of independent cinema at Cipriani Wall Street, with all eyes on the French film Souleymane’s Story. Abou Sangaré clinched the Breakthrough Performer award for his performance in the drama film, marking significant recognition for the rising talent.

Released in May 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival, the film invites viewers to see life through the lens of an undocumented African immigrant hustling on the streets of Paris, with the hope of one day making a future for himself. It was directed by Boris Lojkine and produced by Bruno Nahon.

Among the honorees at the Gotham Independent Film Awards were Sopé Dìrísù, who earned Best Lead Performance for his role in My Father’s Shadow, beating top talents in the industry, while Akinola Davis Jr. won Breakthrough Director, adding to the film’s presence at the evening’s celebration. Wunmi Mosaku also clinched the Supporting Performance prize for her work in Sinners, while the cast of Sinners was honoured with the Ensemble Cast Award, providing one of the evening’s celebratory moments.

While Paul Thomas Anderson’s action epic One Battle After Another took home the top prize for Best Feature from a record-breaking six nominations, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi emerged as the evening’s biggest winner overall. Panahi secured three awards for It Was Just an Accident, winning Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director.

The Gotham Independent Film Awards traditionally serve as an early indicator of momentum heading into the broader awards season, with independent films and breakthrough talent often gaining crucial recognition that carries through to subsequent ceremonies.
