James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially broken into the top 20 highest-grossing films of all time worldwide, continuing the director’s long tradition of late-run box office dominance.
The film is now closing in on $1.4 billion globally, surpassing the lifetime grosses of Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.34B), Black Panther ($1.35B), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36B). This places Avatar: Fire and Ash as the 19th highest-grossing film ever at the global box office.
According to analyst Luiz Fernando, the sequel delivered a strong $28.1 million in its sixth weekend overseas (a modest 36.9% drop from the previous frame) for a $1 billion international haul across 53 markets. The hold is nearly identical to Avatar: The Way of Water, which earned $56.3 million overseas in its own sixth frame with a 36.7% decline.
Despite losing the no.1 spot domestically, Avatar: Fire and Ash still managed to earn $7 million on its sixth three-day weekend. The film has accumulated $378.5 million so far, pushing its global cume to $1.38 billion after 42 days in release.
Analysts predict the film will finish with no more than $1.5 billion, which contrasts well with its $400 million budget. For reference, The Way of Water stood at $2.02 billion worldwide at the same point in its theatrical run.
